SchoolSafeZone
Helping schools create healthier learning environments without disconnecting students from their families.
A nonprofit initiative focused on practical, thoughtful approaches to student phone use in schools.
We do not believe the only choices are unrestricted phone use or taking every student's phone away.
Schools that restrict phones are trying to solve a real problem. Schools that allow unrestricted use are often doing it because they see no viable alternative. SchoolSafeZone exists to help expand those options and support schools in finding approaches that work for their communities.
Our Mission
Why SchoolSafeZone exists.
Student phone use in schools is one of the most actively discussed topics in education today. The concerns are real: research consistently links frequent device distraction to lower task completion, disrupted attention, and reduced engagement during instruction.
At the same time, students and families have legitimate needs for communication — especially in safety-related situations. Any approach to school phone management that ignores this creates its own problems.
SchoolSafeZone was founded on the belief that schools deserve better options than "collect every phone" or "allow everything." We believe in consistent, clearly communicated policies that respect both educational needs and family communication.
Our core principles
Family communication matters
Students should be able to reach family in genuine emergencies. Any approach to school phone management must keep this access possible and clear.
Consistency beats conflict
Schools where rules are consistent, clearly communicated, and fairly applied have fewer enforcement problems.
Context should guide access
Not every moment of the school day is the same. Device access can — and should — reflect those differences.
One-size-fits-all has limits
Different schools, communities, and student populations have different needs. Good policy acknowledges this.
